It is not as rigorous as Organization Validated and Extended Validated certificates and can be obtained by malicious bots, so it is recommended to use only with high-traffic sites that are mainly visited by humans.
Domain Certification
The primary requirement for a certificate is that the domain be yours. The CA will verify this by checking the WHOIS record for the domain or providing a verification file that is placed on your web server to be validated. This will protect your customers and provide them with security.
DCV Verification Methods
There are several ways to complete the domain validation process, but e mail is by far the most popular. Comodo's e-mail will contain a unique verification code, and a link that takes the user to a page of their website for verification. When the domain owner responds to Comodo, their domain is verified and their certificate issued immediately.
DNSimple offers a free WHOIS check of your domain. This will enable you to know the email address registered with the specific domain.
DV Multidomain SSL Certificates
If you wish to secure multiple domains using a single certificate, a DV-multi-domain certificate would be the right choice. This allows you to secure both internal and external domains/subdomains under one installation and with a single renewal period.
Domain Registrar's Information
This method will allow the CA to verify domain ownership directly by looking up information from the domain registrar. For the CA not to reject your certificate, you must ensure that the domain registrar’s information is public.
Select the "Upload file" option at the final step of the SSL activated process to enable this feature. The Certificate Authority is then going to check the file that you have uploaded in your sub-folders, and will issue a DV SSL Certificate.
This process is lengthy, especially when you have a lot of FQDNs. Before completing the process, please ensure that you have added each FQDN to your order.
Domain Authentication
The CA will perform a WHOIS Lookup to confirm that the domain belongs to the individual or company who submitted an SSL application. They can send a confirmation email to the domain admin contact, or set up a DNS record in order to verify the domain's control.
